The Koi Comb — Carried Upstream

Carved from a single block of dark ebony wood, with a koi motif worked along the spine — a pattern with a long history in Chinese decorative art, carried here into something meant to be used daily.

Not just a comb — the koi is one of the most enduring motifs in Chinese visual culture, traditionally associated with perseverance and moving steadily forward against the current. We're not claiming this comb will bring you luck. We just think a good story is worth carving into something you'll actually hold.

The Craft

Each tooth is individually shaped and smoothed by hand before the koi relief is carved into the spine — scales, fins, and the curve of the body worked in by hand, one comb at a time. Because the carving is done by hand, no two combs are ever exactly identical.

Material

Solid ebony wood. Matte, unfinished surface — the dark tone is the natural color of the wood itself, not a coating or dye.

Care

Wipe clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking or prolonged water exposure, which can dull the wood over time.

FAQ

What does the koi motif mean? In Chinese tradition, the koi is often linked to the idea of swimming upstream — steady effort, persistence, moving forward despite resistance. It's a story worth knowing, not a promise about what the comb will do for you.

Is this a treatment or wellness product? No. This is a hand-carved wooden comb intended for everyday grooming use. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition.

Will the carving wear down with use? The relief carving is on the spine, away from the teeth, so normal daily use won't affect it. Like all wood, gentle care will keep it looking its best for years.
