In ancient China, families hung carved peach wood boards on their doors at the New Year as a wish for good fortune in the year ahead. These boards, called *taofu*, slowly became the red Spring Festival couplets still seen on Chinese doors today. Ever since, peach wood has carried a meaning of blessing and new beginnings.
